Handling Antique Furniture: Care, Packing & Liability
Antiques require respect: fragile joints, delicate finishes and often high value. Start with a condition survey and written notes; include provenance where supplied.
Assessment
- Identify weak joints, veneers, loose ornaments and finishes sensitive to moisture.
- Estimate manpower and equipment: number of handlers, trolley, padded board or crate.
Packing & protection
- Remove detachable parts and pack them separately in labelled bags with photos.
- Use acid-free tissue for delicate surfaces, blankets for structural padding and stretch-wrap to secure covers.
- For high-value pieces, build custom crates or use rigid framed supports to prevent pressure points.
Transport & liability
- Place antiques away from heavy items; anchor them with straps and soft ties.
- Document condition with high-resolution images and have the client sign a condition form before departure.
