Long-Distance Move Checklist for Van Operators
Long-distance moves need planning: vehicle readiness, route, rest stops, client communication and contingency plans for weather or traffic.
Pre-departure
- Full vehicle service, tyre pressure, oil, coolant and brakes check; load securement kit on board.
- Confirm access at destination (low bridges, parking, delivery window) and obtain contact numbers.
- Prepare driver pack: maps, permits, the job inventory, client signed documents and emergency contacts.
On the road
- Plan fuel and rest stops; avoid tight urban deliveries during rush hour where possible.
- Monitor load security at each stop and re-tension straps when necessary.
Contingency
- Have alternative routes and local contacts for breakdowns; carry a basic recovery kit and adaptors for towing if needed.
